Dubai's Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has expanded its marine transport fleet with four new fourth-generation traditional abras. Each boat takes up to 24 passengers. The boats have new seating and flooring, digital screens and areas set aside for People of Determination.
The RTA says the abras were built to current technical and safety standards. According to the authority, they follow the Dubai Universal Design Code, the rulebook for accessibility in public facilities and services. They also hold certificates showing compliance with the applicable Gulf Standard Specifications and safety rules.
On board, the interior space has been used more efficiently to make journeys more comfortable. Digital screens show real-time travel information, safety messages and passenger awareness content. The boats also carry electronic destination boards, which the RTA has fitted for the first time on this generation of abra.
Khalaf Belghuzooz Al Zarooni, Director of Marine Transport at the RTA's Public Transport Agency, said the addition is part of efforts to strengthen marine transport within Dubai's public transport network. He said the boats should raise service quality, make operations more efficient and improve passenger safety. He added that the authority will keep bringing in modern and sustainable mobility solutions.
For residents and visitors who use abras, the new boats offer clearer destination information on board and dedicated space for passengers with different mobility needs.
Gulf News reported the addition on 6 November 2026.
