Building work has started on two footbridges on Palm Jumeirah, a joint project of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Dubai Holding's community unit, Khaleej Times reported. The first bridge is due in June 2027 and the second in October 2027.

The first bridge goes up near Shoreline, at the entrance to the Palm, on the inbound side. The second is at Golden Mile, next to the retail frontages, on the outbound side. Each will span 40 metres and have lifts and supporting facilities. The design targets safe, accessible use, with senior Emiratis and People of Determination named as a particular focus.

Together the bridges can carry 2,700 pedestrians an hour, which the authorities say is above current demand and leaves room for growth. About 16,000 residents are expected to benefit. Waiting times for vehicles at nearby intersections are projected to be halved. The bridges replace at-grade crossings, and traffic control measures will operate while the work continues.

The sites were picked after traffic and field studies covering pedestrian and vehicle volumes, land use, and present and future mobility needs.

Part of a wider deal

The bridges form part of a pact signed in March 2025 by the RTA and Dubai Holding. It covers traffic solutions and road upgrades for 15 areas and development projects in Dubai, Palm Jumeirah among them. Further planned work on the Palm includes extra acceleration and deceleration lanes at six locations.

Hussain Al Banna, chief executive of the RTA's Traffic and Roads Agency, described the project as a product of the partnership with Dubai Holding on joining infrastructure to major developments. Francis Gianni, chief executive of Dubai Holding's community unit, said the bridges would "enhance accessibility and connectivity across Palm Jumeirah."

The bridges are also meant to support the Dubai Traffic Safety Strategy goal of zero road fatalities. According to the report, the emirate's pedestrian fatality rate dropped 98 per cent between 2007 and 2025. The number of pedestrian bridges and underpasses reached 178 by the end of 2025, up from 26 back in 2006.

For people living on or planning to rent on the Palm, construction will take place along Shoreline and Golden Mile until the bridges open. Available homes are listed in the DoBy Palm Jumeirah rentals section. Gulf News carried the same announcement.
