Dubai Police have warned that an abrupt or unsafe move between lanes carries a fine of Dh1,000 and four black points. The warning was published on 30 October 2026 as a road safety message on social media.

The message came with video of a collision. According to Khaleej Times, a white car approached a section where traffic divides into separate lanes. Instead of moving over early, the driver appeared to cut across several lanes towards the far-left side. The car entered the path of a Toyota van, and the van was forced off the road onto the grass.

Police asked drivers to keep to their own lane, look at the traffic around them and confirm there is enough room before moving across. Gulf News reported that police also asked drivers to signal with indicators so others get enough warning. Police described sudden swerving as one of the leading causes of serious traffic accidents.

On 29 October, in a separate case, Dubai Police cautioned against driving while drowsy. A truck crashed into a metal barrier along Emirates Road (E611), past the Dubai Flyover in the direction of Abu Dhabi. Police said the driver became drowsy and lost control. He had minor injuries and received treatment where the crash happened. Juma Salem bin Suwaidan, a brigadier who heads traffic operations at Dubai Police, said tiredness can weaken concentration, alertness and the ability to respond quickly to unexpected situations.

The rules apply to anyone behind the wheel in Dubai, including visitors in hire cars. Drivers renting a vehicle can browse options in the DoBy car catalogue.
